Bill Loughborough has created some very interesting instruments out of PVC plumbing pipe.

He calls them Boobam drums. They are made by taking sections of PVC pipe and cutting them to various lengths. He’s added a sort of collar that lets the drums be tuned.

But the construction isn’t the only unique thing about Loughborough’s creations. They also use unusual scales and tunings. Loughborough was inspired by the work of Harry Partch, who was interested in the principles of acoustic resonance, and who also created his own musical instruments.

Loughborough has images and sound samples at his site.
