Three Mexican fishermen that survived nine months at sea before being rescued, even as they watched two companions starve to death before their eyes. Yet, they never lost hope, thanks to Jesus and air guitar.
“We always had the hope of arriving on land,” said fisherman Jesus Vidana.
Vidana practised his artistic skills at sea, he said, sometimes singing romantic ballads and other times playing air guitar to help keep up the spirits of his two friends.
“He shaped his mouth like he was singing with a guitar, so we wouldn’t be sad about what had happened to our companions,” Mr Ordonez said. “At times he actually began to sing. I carried the Bible.”
The fisherman’s tale recalls the art of Jessica deStefano, whose Jesus Playing Air Guitar, is shown above.
The fishermen denied stories that they had trafficked cocaine or eaten their two dead friends.
“None of that is true,” he said. “I am a fisherman … I have always been a shark fisherman,” said Mr Vidana.
According to Jesus Vidana, the boat developed mechanical problems shortly after setting out from San Blas, and heavy winds had carried the boat out to sea. The three men survived by catching and eating raw fish and seabirds and drinking rainwater.
