Sonific: The YouTube of Music?
Sonific today announced the public beta launch of its new service. SongSpots offer a quick, user-friendly and legal way to add music to online properties such as blogs, social networks, personal websites or online community sites, for free. Sonific’s large music library features tens of thousands of independent artists and many record labels whose music has been licensed for this purpose.
Registered Sonific users select their favorite music and create embedded flash players (widgets) called SongSpots which can be customized for each destination site, and are simply pasted into the appropriate input fields. Visitors to a site sonified by Sonific can click on the SongSpots to instantly find out more about the artist, or purchase the music from a variety of affiliates such as iTunes.
In its current incarnation, it doesn’t look like SongSpots will be the YouTube of music, but it looks like it could make it easy for bands and fans to embed music in blogs and sites around the web.
Sonific’s list of content providers includes Cooking Vinyl/Uploadermusic, CDBaby, Cherry Red Records, Rotator Records, Blue Flame Records, and Big Fish Media; additional music from these and many new providers is being added constantly. Major label artists are also expected to be added later this year, and several partnerships that entail full SongSpots integration into existing services will be announced, as well.
Gerd Leonhard, CEO of Sonific, comments: “Many web pages are starting to look and feel almost like TV channels, and many of their creators now want music. The tremendous response to our private beta shows that today’s social network users, bloggers, and even casual users who create their own content online, are very excited about using music to personalize their online creations. Going forward, Sonific’s unique technology and deep content relationships will enable us to play a leading role in providing licensed music to online content creators while building an increasingly viral and powerful syndication network for music. Our users get the benefit of using great music, and our artists and content providers gain the benefit of getting both widespread attention and increased music sales at zero cost.”
Derek Sivers, President of CDBaby and currently one of Sonific’s largest content providers, adds: “The CD Baby artist community has been more excited about Sonific than any other outlet in recent memory. It’s a brilliant new way of presenting music to the net.”
