San Francisco Regional champion Craig Hot Lixx Hulahan Billmeier became the 4th US Air Guitar National Champion June 22 at the 2006 Air Guitar Championships.

With near-perfect scores in the compulsory round, he defeated a formidable array of talent from across the country, including US Air Guitar’s first Collegiate and Online champions and defending National Champion Fatima “Rockness Monster” Hoang.

Billmeier will travel to Finland this September to represent Team USA in the Air Guitar World Championships.

RocktopussBehold Rocktopuss, Air Guitar Champion:

Dave “The Roctopuss” Ayling, of Columbus, blew the crowd away at the U.S. Air Guitar Regional Championships with his rendition of Get Your Hands Off My Woman by the Darkness. He performed in a trucker cap, flannel shirt, and torn jeans. “I don’t need magic clothes to win,” he said. “All you need is American pride and a sweet mustache.”

“I cannot play guitar to save my life,” he said afterward.

Ever wonder how air guitar competitions are judged?

According to the Entertainment Industry Incubator, a group that’s hosting the May 24th Miami Air Guitar Regionals at Miami’s Studio A:

Air guitar is part karaoke, part performance art, all rocking out… it allows anyone with - or without - talent to momentarily feel like a Rock God! Mastery of air guitar can be traced to three elements:

  • Technical merit - You don’t have to know what notes you’re playing, but the more your invisible fretwork corresponds to the music, the better your performance.
  • Stage Presence - Anyone can do it in the privacy of their bedroom. Few have what it takes to rock a crowd of hundreds or even thousands - all without an instrument.
  • Airness - Airness is defined as “the extent to which a performance transcends the imitation of a real guitar and becomes an art form in and of itself.”

The Age reports on the tragic death of a Chinese teenager that “got so carried away while bouncing up and down on his bed mimicking a rock star that he flew out of a third floor window to his death.”
